This map shows two historic map views of Bournemouth, the first is an 1897 Street Map and the other is a 1931 Ordnance Survey Map

Bournemouth History

1795 - 1803

Captain Lewis Tregonwell and his troop of Dorset Rangers patrol the local coastline

1810

Tregonwell returns to the area with his wife Henrietta.

1812

Tregonwell develops an area west of the Bourne Stream for summer holiday use for his family and friends. He builds his mansion in what is now Exeter Road.

1836

'The Lord of the Manor's plan for the new Marine Village of Bourne' - basically villas on the east side of today's Westover Road plus the Bath Hotel.

1841

Dr Augustus B Granville, the leading authority on the spas of England, strongly recommends the development of Bournemouth as an invalid resort.

1845

Consecration of the original St Peter's, Bournemouth's founding parish church.

1856

The original Bournemouth (basically a semi-circle of one mile radius with its centre where Pier Approach is today) is governed by a Board of Commissioners.

1890

Bournemouth gains Municipal Borough Status.

1900

Bournemouth becomes a County Borough in the County of Hampshire.
